First Steps in Becoming Green

Here’s an easy checklist that’ll make it easy for you become an environmentally friendly person! You can print it out (on recycled paper, or on the other side of a used piece) and check it off as you go along.

____ Sign up to pay your bills online. You will not only save 37 cents on a stamp, but paper and processing as well.

____ Buy organically grown produce. You would not believe the amount of chemicals fruits and vegetable we are eating today have on and in them! Genetically modified produce is usually only beneficial to the person growing it (they get more produce for less money, at the expense of you, the consumer). Pesticides are usually absorbed by the skin of the produce, so many times no amount of washing will get rid of the horrible chemicals.

____ Stop junk mail from coming to you buy writing to Mail Preference Service, Direct Marketing Association, P.O. box 9008, Farmingdale, NY 11735-9008, or go to stopjunk.com. This will not only save trees but an amazing amount of energy as well.

____ By purchasing items that contain less packaging you not only cut down on solid waste, but you will also be saving many energy and forest related resources.

____ Purchase some compact florescent lightbulbs, you’ll not only reduce your energy consumption, but your monthly electric bill as well!

____ In your home or office use 100% recycled paper products (try Newleaf paper-it’s amazing!) If they don't have recycled products at your nearest store(s) please ask. The more people who ask, the more likely they will begin to offer environmentally friendly products.

____ Invest in some rechargeable batteries. Although the initial cost of the charger is more than you would want to pay for a pack of disposable batteries, rechargeable batteries can sometimes be recharged 50 or more times!

____ Turn the water off when in between tooth brushings, and be aware of any other time you can save resources.

____ Recycle every paper product after you have reused it. Americans throw away about 30 million trees each year, in newsprint alone! Recycling it would not only save those trees but cut down on the related air pollution by 95%!

____ Get renewable energy, for about $3.00 more per month (on a $35.00 bill) you can be powered by non-polluting energy. If you live in the Rhode Island and Massachusetts area email info@startmotions.com and the change over to an environmentally friendly existance will be even easier!

If you can check off all (or even some) of the things on this list, congratulations! Your helping enormously!
